Installation monitoring & commissioning a MoorMaster at the Port of Salalah, Oman

SJB have been engaged to designing heavy industrial product for ports & the marine industry in conjunction with the Cavotec MoorMaster design team. We have supported the new product development team to help determine their product roadmap as well as during periods of heavy development and testing. The MoorMasters are very unique units being deployed into harsh marine environments worldwide, which makes them a very complex but rewarding design challenge.

The MoorMaster is a machine that is attached to the berth / quay and uses hydraulics to move a large vacuum pad out to a ship / ferry and uses vacuum to hold the vessel still. The unit is able to reduce vessel motion to allow loading / unloading operations to proceed.

Designing the MoorMasters is a complex engineering task, the units have a very tight package volume, must dynamically move / resist extremely high cyclic forces in the order of 400kN as well as operate unattended in a marine environment. In the design of these units SJB must consider

  • Hydraulic systems - both packaging and operating parameters

  • Structural Steel work design - including castings

  • Control methodology

  • Electrical systems specification & routing

  • Serviceability & minimisation of port downtime

  • Civil interfaces

  • Installation + shipping constraints

  • Matching Industrial design aesthetics

  • Test units and test rigs

All of these factors make for a challenging product development cycle, but working with the amazing team at Cavotec is always enjoyable.
